What is RSS?
Save the time and trouble of searching your most frequently visited Web sites for new information. RSSReally Simple Syndicationis a clever tool that delivers updates from your favorite sites directly to you. RSS makes it possible to review a large number of sites in a short time. You subscribe to the updates, also known as feeds, choosing from among three types of aggregators, which present feeds in different formats:
- Desktop: feeds update on your desktop computer automatically through software applications called aggregators or RSS readers, many of which are available for free download
- Web-based: feeds are hosted online and subscribed to as a service. RSS features are also being added into popular Web browsers and portal sites.Mobile device: feeds are checked manually and downloaded to your mobile phone/PDA all at once
How Does It Work?
RSS makes use of an XML code that continuously scans Web sites for content updates and then broadcasts those updates to all subscribers. Then, like TiVo aggregates all your favorite shows for you to watch on demand, RSS aggregates your news updates into a list of headlines and short summaries; you click the links to read the full story.
How Do I Subscribe?
There are two ways to add a Web site to your aggregator. Click on the link below to subscribe, or cut and paste the URL of the RSS feed into your RSS reader to create a new feed.
Once youve added a feed, updates will begin immediately; you could receive an update within seconds, depending on how often content is refreshed on the site youve subscribed to. Its also just as easy to unsubscribe if you decide you no longer want to receive a feed: simply delete the feed or URL from your RSS reader.
What Are The Benefits Of RSS?
If you already subscribe to regular updates through a news site, you know the benefits of access to the information that matters most to you. If you subscribe to multiple such services, RSS is more convenient because it consolidates all your subscribed feeds in one place. Since RSS is instantaneous, youll never have to wait until a designated day or time for your updates. And important news will never be redirected to the Trash folder by e-mail spam filters.
